This glowing sandstone alcove is part of a small finger canyon in the Coyote Buttes area of Arizona. The floor of the alcove is six feet above the base of the wall. Wind and water erosion created the remains of the small shelves in the image, and the debris left in the corner was carried there by windstorms. When light bounces from clouds or opposing rock walls in sandstone country like this, the glow is warm and fills the shadows with a soft light, as is captured in this image.
